What Does the Norfolk Arts Center Board Do?

A corporation, whether for-profit or nonprofit, is required to have a governing Board of Directors. Recently the Norfolk Arts Center welcomed five new board members to join our now 15 member Board of Directors. As the new board members settle in, the Board Development Committee begins to think about the next class of board members who will serve terms beginning in July 2011.

The role of a non-profit board member is comprised of the following primary activities:

·         Fundraising: Board fundraising activities may include major donor solicitations, sponsorship solicitations, membership recruitment, serving on a fundraising committee, and efforts to boost event registrations. Board members are encouraged use their connections to spur interest in and support of the Norfolk Arts Center.
·         Oversight of Programs: The Board of the Norfolk Arts Center is responsible for general oversight of the organization’s programs. This role does not extend to the operations behind the programs, but does include fiduciary oversight.
·         Strategic Planning: The board is the primary force behind the organization’s strategic planning decisions and planning for the future of the organization. Board members create or update the strategic plan and evaluate the implementation.
·         Protect the Public’s Interest: Nonprofits receive preferential tax treatment because they provide a “public” service that would not otherwise be available without subsidy. The board’s job is to represent the public’s interest in assuring that the agency serves effectively. The board accomplishes this oversight and evaluation function by keeping well informed about the activities of the organization.

The Norfolk Arts Center Board meets on the third Wednesday of every month at 7:00 a.m. with committee meetings as needed. The Board Development Committee accepts nominations from board members, staff, and members of the Norfolk Arts Center. You can complete a nomination form at anytime by contacting the Norfolk Arts Center at 371-7199 or click on the link below.
